Session 11: The Meaning of Authority
Matthew 28:16-20
Preparation Resources
This week we are looking at the famous "great commission" scene from Matthew. This short passage raises so many interesting topics about heaven and earth, the trinity, and our commandments from Jesus.
I am including two Tim Keller sermons, one on these 5 verses and that focuses on the trinity and one on the full chapter 28 that was an Easter sermon that Tim Keller preached back in 1996:
Discussion Topics
1) Verse 17 says that when the disciples met the risen Christ in Galilee that they worshiped him but that some hesitated. Does this surprise you? What must the disciples have been thinking at this point?
2) What does it mean for Jesus to have all authority on earth? What are some practical ramifications?
3) What do you think Jesus meant when he said "teach them to observe everything that I have commanded you". How might it relate to the Sermon on the Mount?
4) What does it mean to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
