Recommended Preparation

2) Mark For Everyone, pages 129-137

6) David Bisgrove Sermon, Marriage and Discipleship
7) David Bisgrove Sermon, Wealth and Discipleship
Discussion Questions
1) In the first part of this passage, the Pharisees present Jesus with a "trap question". Given the recent history of John the Baptist and Herod's marital status, how would this put him in a tough spot no matter how he answered?
2) How does Jesus deal with this trap?
3) What point is Jesus making by referencing what Moses commanded about divorce in Genesis 1:27 and 2:24 while the Pharisees note instead about what Moses permitted about divorce in Deuteronomy 24:1-4?
4) When Jesus is safely back in the privacy of the house with his disciples, what does Jesus add to the answer?
5) How does Jesus' attitude toward children differ from that of his disciples? How are the discussions about divorce and children connected?
6) In verse 17, the rich man asks Jesus "what must I do to inherit eternal life" (NRSV)? Given the Jewish understanding of the present age and the age to come, what was he actually looking for?
7) Jesus initially answers the man's questions by restating some of the Ten Commandments. What is the focus of the ones he quotes? How do the commandments he leaves out relate to his directive in verse 31?
8) How can wealth actually be a hindrance to us in our call to follow Jesus?
9) This passage addresses two controversial topics of the day (divorce and wealth). What are some controversial areas Christians deal with today?
