Study Preparation and Discussion Questions - Mark 11.1-25
The Triumphal Entry and Jesus Cleanses the Temple
Recommended Preparation
1) Mark 11.1-25
2) Mark For Everyone
3) Jesus the King, Chapter 11, The Temple
4) Tim Keller Sermon, The Final Temple
5) Tim Keller Easter Sermon, I Will Rise Up
Discussion Questions
1) Jesus riding up to the temple mount would clearly have called to mind words of the prophet Zechariah for those there. What do Zechariah 9.9-10 and 14:4 indicate Jesus is saying about himself?
2) How does the reaction of the people confirm that they understand Jesus' symbolic message?
3) What is the significance of the chant of the crowd (vv. 9-10). Read Psalm 118 (particularly verses 25-26).
4) What is the significance of the people spreading their cloaks on the road?
5) What was the original purpose of the temple? What was the symbolic statement Jesus was making with his "cleansing"?
5) What do you make of the odd story of Jesus condemning the fig tree? Mark has given us this story, once again in "sandwich" form. The outer part concerns the fig tree, the inner part concerns the temple. How do both parts of this "sandwich" help explain each other?
