Study Preparation and Discussion Questions - Mark 1.14-20
The Calling of the Disciples
Recommended Preparation
1) Mark 1.14-20
2) Mark for Everyone, pages 7-10
3) Jesus the King, Chapter 2
4) Tim Keller sermon, Called to be Disciples
5) Short (5 minute) NT Wright talk on the Kingdom of God
Discussion Questions
1) In verse 15, we hear Jesus speak from the first time as Mark quotes his Gospel announcement: The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” What exactly do you think he means by that? What do you think this "Kingdom of God" is that Jesus keeps talking about?
2) Why do you think Jesus waited until John was in prison to announce this good news?
3) What is the significance of Jesus' call of his first four apostles in verses 16-20? People observing this (or reading about it) would have found it shocking. Why? What might be an equivalent call and shocking response today?
4) In one sentence, how would you summarize Mark 1:1-20?
5) The disciples left their lifelong careers immediately to follow Jesus. To submit to Jesus as King is no small steps for anyone. What do you perceive as the biggest obstacles to you personally submitting to Jesus as King and transferring authority of your life over to him?
