Study Preparation and Discussion Questions - Mark 1:21-45
Exorcism and Healings
Recommended Preparation
1) Mark 1.21-45
2) Mark for Everyone, pages 10-15
3) Jesus the King, Chapter 3, The Healing (pages 28-39)
4) Sermon: A New Authority (Mark 1.21-34)
5) Sermon: Prayer Word Deed (Mark 1.35-45)
6) Sermon: A Leper Healed (Mar 1.40-45)
Discussion Questions
1) Why do you think the people in the synagogue were astonished at Jesus' teaching? (verses 21-22). Mark doesn't convey what Jesus taught, but Luke does in what may have been the same message or a similar one (Luke 4.16-22). Does this clarify why the people may have been astonished?
2) Jesus didn't stay in one place like John did. Instead, he traveled around Galilee, preaching the good news and healing many people. But after he heals a leper, why do you think he doesn't want word to leak out about that healing? (verses 35-45)
3) What do you make of all of the stories of healings and exorcisms and evil spirits in the Gospels? Does it make you uncomfortable?
4) Looking back over this first chapter of Mark, how does Jesus model for us different aspects of announcing the kingdom of God?
