Discussion Questions
Earlier in chapter 2, Jesus takes upon himself the authority to forgive sins. In this next section, he goes further "over the top" with his claims of authority.
1) Did you have any Sabbath rules or restrictions while you were growing up? Do you follow any special practices now?
2) Sabbath observance represents an example of "religion" - following rules and commandments to achieve acceptance. What distinction is Jesus making between this thinking and his gospel?
3) What do you think Jesus meant in his startling statement in 2:27-28?
4) Tim Keller says that verse 3:6 summarizes one of the key themes of the New Testament. What did the Pharisees and Herodians represent in those days? Which groups or forces are the Pharisees todays? Which are the Herodians?
