Session 10: The Meaning of Redemption
Luke 24:13-35
Preparation Resources
This week we are looking at the famous "Walk to Emmaus" story of one of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Luke.
This week we have not one, but two, Tim Keller sermons on this passage, preached about 10 years apart. I've only listened to one of the two so far (Two Meet Jesus), so I'm not sure how much overlap there is between the two sermons:
Discussion Topics
1) Try to imagine the general mood and the tone of voices of the two walking companions. What do you imagine they were saying about the resurrection and what had transpired since that evening?
2) From your knowledge of Old Testament prophesy, what passages might "the strange" have discussed with them in verses 25-27?
3) Why do you think Jesus did this impromptu Bible study instead of just revealing his identity?
4) The men said "we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel". What did they mean by "redeem Israel". Why had they apparently abandoned that hope?
5) NT Wright points out the Luke "book-ends" his Gospel with the story of the 12-year old Jesus in the temple and this story. What similarities to the two stories have?
6) What two things had to happen before the followers recognized Jesus?
7) Speaking metaphorically, Tim Keller says that "most of us are on the road to Emmaus". Does that make sense to you? What does that mean?
